Magic from the Humble Cupboard

Some things are best hidden in plain sight; So it is with the plethora of magical ingredients already at your disposal. Though herb magic is my passion, my first ventures in the esoteric were more D.I.Y. and make-do magic, rather than rare ingredients and expensive oils. You do not need to spend a fortune to practice. This will be an ever expanding list of components that you probably have in your fridge or cupboard right now, and how to use them in ritual, meditation, and spell crafting.

Beer-Dream magic (courtesy of the hops), friendship, oaths. Love, healing, and protection (barley); prosperity.

Bread-Money. Use with butter for employment spells (your "bread and butter").

Butter- The Fae. Wealth.

Canola/Corn oil- Sun, Crow/ Sacred Trickster.

Chalk- marking out circles, inscribing runes and sigils.

Cinnamon-energy, lust.

Coffee- quick thinking, study ( you're using it to cram anyway)! Adds a potent kick to any other working. Useful in emergencies, when you REALLY need something to happen quickly.

Eggs- Traditionally, used in the same manner as a poppet. For drawing out an illness, rub the egg onto the afflicted body part, and bury the egg. As it decomposes, so does the illness. While I advise you to get to the doctor, a lot of us can't afford to go. You need some tool at your disposal.
Eggs can also be used in any ritual associated with the Sun. During the Middle Ages, there was a popular belief that witches and faeries rode in eggshells; this may be synonymous with astral travel. Experiment. Dried
(or baked) and crumbled eggshells are also known as "Cascarilla powder".

Flour- Prosperity, stability. Reaping the fruit of your labor. Invocations to Ceres, Demeter, Lugh, or any god associated with the harvest. Can also be used to obscure, hide, or blend in.

Honey-love, platonic and romantic, as well as peace and harmony spells. Also used in invocations to Freya, Venus, Aphrodite and Oshun. You get more flies with honey, as the old saying goes. Use when you need a favor; especially potent to this end when mixed with butter.

Hot chocolate- lust

Milk- offerings, especially to the Goddess. Moon magic. The Fair Folk.

Noodles- health, long life.

Olive oil- Wisdom, honors, spirituality. One of the gifts of Athena. Use for anointing.

Peanut butter-Prosperity, Earth magic.

Pepper- Energy, protection. Associated strongly with Mars and all things under its influence. If you are truly destitute, pick up a few packets from a fast food joint!

Sage- The same herb you dress your chicken with is wonderful for purifying your sacred space, cleansing auras, and, if you cannot afford to buy charcoal blocks, powdred sage is a great substitute. Just light, blow, and use the embers for your loose incense.

Sugar- love. The classic formula called "Drawing Powder" is usually nothing more than confectioners sugar.

Salt- Purification, protection, and prosperity. Use to cleanse your magical tools, especially stones. To ensure prosperity, or increase your cash flow, simply refill the salt shaker on the New Moon.

Tea- black tea for lust, green tea for health. Herbal tea has its own associations, depending on what its composed of. Bust open those tea bags and use them in charm bags.

Thread-Use for binding, sewing poppets etc. Knot magic

Vinegar- health and healing. Purification, banishing, casting and repelling curses. Good for cleansing yourself of negatve energy.

Now, if a spell calls for Sea Salt, we do add it free (where stated) with our Spell Packages, but as we cannot verify it's harvested date, we cannot, in a clear conscience, consider it on par with our rigorous qualifications.
