"Steal This Book of Shadows"

Emotions! Deep! How to start? Well, let's start, for one thing, that this doesn't constitute medical advice. If you have severe emotional problems, I suggest you find a way to deal with those, first, and then perhaps return to study here. This isn't a self-help guide on finding a way through your childhood traumas, nor is it going to be easy on the ones who have as-of-yet undiagnosed mental & emotional illnesses! This line of philosophical inquiry can be draining, mentally taxing, and (to the un-protected) "It can Screw With Your Head, Badly"! You better "Know Yourself", and well, or you could be starting down the path to a mental breakdown! That being said, let's begin... Ever watch a movie and have your hair stand on end? Not the "Follicle-tightening, therefor the hair rises" kind, but the one that gives a kind of Static-Charge to your skin, all over! How about that really great song, and the first time it truly stirred something in you? Have you ever danced at a drum circle and lost yourself in the rhythm, going from exhaustion to Ecstatic Frenzy in a blink? Ever have someone walk out of your life and your heart feel like it was scooped out? These are a few examples of when Emotion is powerful enough to have a profound physical change. I know some will say "These all have physical causes". Well, there are so many things taken as common sense, that one tends to overlook the fact that their still magical. Where is the hormone that causes your Heart to Break? Where does "Hair standing on end" have a physical use in evolution? Why does the release of endorphins carry us so far mentally beyond the simple cessation of physical exhaustion, and into consciousness-changing states? Where is the evolutionary justification for any of it? The more important question is "What other thresholds have we pushed back, as a side effect of these States"? I assert that by achieving these states that induce physical changes, evolution has accidentally "Cracked the Egg" on wider vistas of the uni-/multiverse. I could write a whole doctoral thesis on "how the ecstatic state detracts from hard & fast survival techniques inherent & imperative to long-term survival as a species", but that goes far beyond the scope of this chapter. (The difficulty of this section is in how certain experiments haven't been delved into yet. Please bear with me.) This would be easier if you already had experience in chakras & the Aura. We'll broach Chakras for a short span: You have seven energy centers interpenetrating your physical & etheric bodies (I hate that term "Etheric", but what else can you call it? A Common Lexicon is sorely missed at these points). The etheric bodies are lumped together into the term "Aura". Emotions feed the Chakras and Chakras feed the Aura. Each chakra has a corresponding aspect & attribute that developed in parallel to evolutionary progression. (More on that in later installments). What we need to focus on is two-fold: Emotionally Charging your Aura & "Ecstatic State Focus". Emotional charging: What we need to do, for Magic, is to push every emotion to a near "Ecstatic State". You need to be able to be able to re-experience them, from memory, and they need to be intense! We're attempting to produce 'solar flares' of energy, and your emotions are that power. You need to be able to produce as much of it as possible, and that means you need to know how yours are triggered! We won't always be using them the same way from one working to the next. Their application to your works in Psychokinesis (P.K, from now on) & Probability Modification will vary diametrically from how they are applied to Telepathic Experiments. In some works you'll be attempting to demonstrate a "Need" ("Opposites Attract"), and in others you'll be 'Putting It Out There' ("Like attracts Like"). As for "Ecstatic State Focus"~ When one is thoroughly over-come by a single emotion, there is a clarity of "Will". Doubt is gone, any question of self-worth is out of the picture, and concentration is heightened. I'm sure you've been there. "Overcome With...." is usually how it starts. Grief, Passion, & Rage are the most common. "A sense of Peace" is another, but that mostly attributed to Samadhi (a Term in Transcendental Meditation). One must know Control of these emotions before one attempts to achieve these states. This state is one you'll be working towards, and is the "Bread & Butter", as well as "Milk, Eggs, & Sugar" of every spell caster's arsenal/milieu/palette. Palette best describes it, as these are the paints you will be using to re-color the world around you.
Now, this is all about you! Your hatreds & fears, your passions & Rages, your pacifiers & pains. Your history is your power. Now, you'll also need to know when the emotions you're experiencing are Yours, or are Projected by an outside source. Telepathic assault is going to become a very serious possibility, and you'll need to know where that fear/rage/pain/etc is really coming from. You'll have to learn to examine your emotions whenever a sever or illogical outburst is eminent. For this, we'll be going back to Meditation: Take Exercise Four: "The Candle Exercise", but we'll dispense with the Candle. What we'll be focusing on is you. Remember the chattering Monkey we discussed? Well, we're going to take it out and examine it. We're going to simulate "Poking it with an Emotional Stick". Think about your fears, and joys, and offenses, and ....everything. Explore You! Meditate on what makes you into you. Find your triggers. We spend a lot of time talking about those people that push our buttons, and we tend to avoid looking for what they're really pushing. Another thing to look at is how strongly you can inspire those emotions within yourself. How hard can you push your buttons? You know when to lay off, and I DO suggest stopping if you find yourself on the verge of say suicide or a killing spree. Also, look for external triggers you can use: A song that gets you pumped, the smell of an ex's perfume/cologne that "Takes you back", or a film that brings a tear to your eye (Mine is Boromir's Death Scene in L.o.t.R.: "Fellowship of The Ring"). This can help for those "hard to trigger" feelings that may take too long to summon when needed, all on your lonesome. Trust Me: You'll need them! Suggested Reading: "Creative Visualization", by Shakti Gawain. "Prometheus Rising" by Robert Anton Wilson: An Awe-Inspiring Guide on The Evolutionary Development of The Human Brain, and It's Software! I can't Suggest This Book strongly enough! It includes the research of psychologists both Famous, and Infamous! Look for it from New Falcon Press.
