(Brought To You By,...)

    A Refresher:

"When most occultists think symbols, they break down into several subheadings:

Runes of Empowering           (Symbols Magical & Spiritual)
            Ciphers                                          (Secret Codes)
Dedicated Name-Sigils       (Names of Powers in a single symbol)
Amulets & Talismans           (Shapes, Images, and Arrangements of Letters)"

A final note on Runes & Ciphers (For Now): Ogham Script, a written cipher of which little is truly known, has been attributed every aspect along this litany of legerdemain, from Secret Writing, to Tree Calendar justification, to personal empowerment, and more. To be quite honest, it's never been seen in any ancient form other than the marking road-markers & grave stones. The "Rosetta Stone" of Ogham is to be found in "The Book of Ballymote", on page 170-R. We have it in JPG form, in "The Starving Sorcerer's Library": See what you make of it?

Where were we?
            Ah, Yes!

Dedicated Name-Sigils: Here is where we get to the intrinsically magical. These are the names as passed-down to priests & magi by the very entities the represent. They are the exact “Phone Number” of the empowered entity that they represent. Some would entertain that Odic Runes are of the same ilk, but in so much, are representative of the core concept, as opposed to the Divine Construct that encompasses them. Experimentation will show you the difference, of course.

Examples of these name-sigils are the 50 (or 80 in most circles) Names of Marduk. These were popularized in the 1976 dubious publication of "The Necronomicon", attributed to a man known only as 'Simon'. It borrows heavily, VERY heavily, from the writings of H. P. Lovecraft (of which I am a HUGE fan). On the Plus-Side, it opened a wider vista of sorcery to an audience previously un-aware.

Each of these represents the personality facets of this single individual, and are coupled to specific attributes of a core entity. Though this is seen in great detail, in Assyro-Summerian Sorcery,  they haven't cornered the market. As "European Mysticism" developed, after the fall of Rome, it began to incorporate the practices of many wildly divergent cosmologies. One of it's "Grails" was "The Key of Solomon The King" (Also in "The Starving Sorcerer's Library"), as well as it's little brother, "The Goetia". Both are Rife with sigils, symbols, and summoning-circle, each dedicated to a specific entity.  Though my research hasn't traced a viable route of the origin of this book, it's alleged cradle was the middle east, where these forms of summoning-styles were common place, with the "Pagan" tribes.

I Wish to state for the Record that I AM AGAINST SUMMONINGS!
I find the "Bill" always Out-Weighs The Pay-Off.

You can do it yourself, with a little more practice!

~End of Sermon!~

Amulets & Talismans: This seems a sort of "Catch-All" Category for the remainder. Like Runes, they trigger responses, physically as well as metaphysically, to empower, ward, trigger, contain, reflect, invoke, evoke, or simply add momentum. We know these as the Vedic Tattwas that represent the Elements. We see them daily (here in colorful Colorado, 50 Times Daily) in off-the-shelf, Azure Green Pentagrams, et al. We inscribe them as Number Squares from "The Book of Sacred Magic of Abra Melin" (as well, located as a PDF in "The Starving Sorcerer's Library"). We paint them colorfully, in the Colonial "Pow-Wow" magic of 1700's American Settlers. They adorn our altars in shaped candles of Seven Knobs, or Erect Penises. They are the wands we wave, the boline that cut, the "Measure" of "Wicca", the colors of our robes & charm- or mojo-bags, and even the shape of the moon, herself. The symbols, associations, and Mandalas that are physical representations of a mental state are as numerous & varied as the cultures, even the individuals who produce them. The take from nature, from culture, even from hallucinations & dreams. They are inspired by a moment, and distilled from the ages.

We will employ these in multi-form, as we develop this text, and show how to apply them, as well, to the "Many Laws of Magic"*.

*- No one can seem to agree on how many there really are: "20-sumthin' Laws", I always call them!
