Spellcasting #12
Triggers

(Brought To You By,...)

This page, I'd like to discuss Triggers.

These are NOT "Delayed-Blast" effects. No. What I'm talking about that are the countless intrinsic & sensory experiences that "Put us in that frame of Mind"

"You mean 'Mood', Right?"

Nope.

What I'm talking about are Conscious & sub-conscious mechanisms of the brain, as well as "Specialized Thinking". I'm talking about Brain-wave ranges & combinations, as well as a type of filtering of certain forms of distractive thinking, that better help us in the spell-forms that they apply to. I'm talking about a change in state of mind, both subtle & grotesque, that is tailored specifically to your desired goals for the spells you cast.

Let's try something simple, as an example:

Think back to your childhood. What age? What season? What location? That's a lot of tricky questions.

Go to a spice rack, and open a canister of nutmeg. Walk out to where someone is mowing a lawn, and breathe deep.

Think back to your childhood. Easier now, isn't it? Not so many questions, just a simple answer to a moment linked to that smell.

    "Memory triggers?"

Yeah; that's one kind. One of the ones you've learned. What is memory but self-defined neuro-chemical bonds, programmed by event association, and emotional attachment to that event? Do you think they're the only kind? Do you honestly think that 50 Million Years have passed, brining us from tiny lemurs to the great intelligent Land Apes that we are, and the species didn't pick up "Ingrained Triggers" along the way? Do you think you have to teach yourself everything, from the beating of your heart to giving-up at your last breath?

No, My dear reader. You the product of countless survival techniques, ingrained into your systems, by ages of survival. Many of these systems aren't even applicable to survival on land. The most primitive "circuits", at the core of our evolutionary development, are geared to survival within a fluid environment.

But let's not get off track.....

With smell, you've learned these associations, and formed the bonds and triggers yourself. There are other bond/trigger combinations besides smell. Others, still, beyond the ones you made, but those that were forged, instead, in the crucible of survival & natural selection.

...and Others, yet, that we have no way of knowing that we have, or the ones we've unconsciously made.

You've learned these connections (the ones that you know you have) through experience.  You will also find that there are triggers you don't know you have. There are ways of collating, correlating, & processing information, as well as centers of the brain, that you don't know about, until you find the right triggers. Sometimes singular, sometimes in concert, a certain set of events, sounds, objects (Some Objects are Triggers, Some Triggers are Objects), colors, and more, will trigger a brain-change (The Pop-Psychology term). These changes change the way you view reality. These changes alter the way information & energy move through your mind. This alters, boosting & dampening, your Five Internal Mechanisms (Remember Them?).

     "Like Drugs?"

Don't sound so enthusiastic: I'll get to that!

The best ones are the subtle ones. Why? Because they require the development of greater sensitivity to them. The greater the sensitivity, the more you perceive. The more you perceive, the greater information you receive, the larger your reality-model, and the easier it is to find the "Fulcrum-Points" within reality from which to change it. ~WHEW!~

    There are many other triggers:

Sound: Not just rhythm, but frequency. Not just notes, but melody. Not simply song, but environment. Not just theme, but repetition. Not simply what, but When.

"Rhythm": Drum beats alone can alter a perception. As the sole source of sound, they can drop you to a very "Visceral" state. I find them good for combat rituals, but they may hit you differently.
"Frequency": Notes are produced, and the brain perceiving them changes with that perception. A Transcendental Meditation Practitioner had his brain-waves monitored & recorded while achieving Samadhi. When played back to test subjects, the subjects' brainwaves began to emulate the sounds they heard, taking them towards the same state. The New-Wager's call it "Entrainment". It's really called "Sympathy".
"Melody": A simple tune, one that we've never heard before, can conjure up images. Are these learned responses, like the smells, or is it the true legacy of the Bards? Is this where Aristotle's "True Name" concept is spelled out in Experiences? Is this the "Verb" to Aristotle's "Noun"? I find it so. This is one of the reasons I stress Synethstesia.
"Environment" : Listen to lightly trickling water and not become relaxed (or suddenly need to Pee!). Hear Thunder, and try not to feel that power. Hear the wind, carrying leaves, and see if you don't make voices from the "Hiss & Crackle".
"Repetition": Gregorian Chants, Tibetan Vedas, Sioux Battle-Dances, and more, are repetitive ceremonies, geared to gestalt, or group-mind sympathy. All as One, in casting or ritual. Next time you're in a witch's circle, you'll know why these tired old repetitive name-cycle chants are still clung-to: They Work.
"When": Your mind works differently at dawn. Hearing is amplifies & exaggerated in the dark. Soft music, after 11pm makes you drowsy. The time of day effects you in many ways most have yet to explore.

DAMN The Clock!
That's all the time I have tonight.

Monday:  The list Continues....
