Spellcasting #16
The Twenty-Somethin' Laws of Magic!

(Brought To You By,...)

You can ask any serious practitioner, and they’ll attribute them to Bonewits. You can dig in their library, and find them adjusted by Whitcomb, in his Magician’s Companion. You can flip through Zell, and… Don’t get me started!

But what are they?

Depending on who you ask there are 20 laws, or 26, or 28, or… The number changes with the teller, and though some will expound on the what it does, or the how to use it, they can’t be certain how they work.

But What Are They?

Many spells call on them. They have been used through the ages, and with dramatic results. They have been written into mythology as The Ways, and have been passed down through these tales, and taken as wrote that they are Physics of Metaphysics.

But What The F #@K are They?!

Quite simply, they are the age-old techniques for composing or improving spells, as they have been passed down. These don’t draw simply from one lone tradition, but many, any, and all! They are the cross-section of spell castings, distilled down. If you look through the break down of each, as this section unfolds, you’ll be able to distill your favorites for your self. You’ll be able to flesh them out, and even improve your spell works by employing more and more-specific elements/laws to tailor your spells to Your circumstances.

Many are argued to be the outcome, or the primitive perceptions of, Probability Physics. Others argue the purely psychological mechanisms that they instill, inspire, or trigger. Truth be told, I only know of three practitioners (including myself) that are even working within this framework. To say that more research needs to be done is a grotesque Understatement. They work. They have a list of historical precedents as long as your arm. They have an efficacy that can’t be argued. As we go through this list, I will give demonstrations, from within, without, or both, as to applications.

Also, as these writings unfold, we’ll take favored spells, and show how to expand them, employing the various laws. We’ll start with the classically familiar laws, and dig deeper into the more esoteric and internalized mentalities.

Many of these laws are simple affirmation devices to remind the spell caster that the world, this reality if you will, is capable of supporting their metaphysical manipulations without violating the ‘firmament’ of it. We live in a physical world, and the biggest hurdle to overcome is that we tend to perceive the world as more ‘immutable’ than it really is. The ‘internalized laws’ help to remind us of that. These internalized laws are what separate the spell caster from the Really Effective Witch or Wizard.

When they say, “You’ve either got ‘It’, or you Don’t”, this is the “It” they’re talking about.

Shall we begin?

As I see it, it would be tantamount to plagiarism for me to list out the other two authors’ delineations of the “20/26 laws of magic”, as they are both A) Copyright protected, and B) Slightly ‘Off’ from this teacher’s observations. Where they Vary, I’ll more than happily add the comparisons for the sake of argument, but out of respect for my fellow researchers, I’ll have to limit reproductions of their works.

If you wish to explore the findings of the other two, They can be found in,…

“Real Magic”, by Isaac Bonewits
“The Magician’s Companion”, by Bill Whitcomb

Most we agree upon. Other, I would attach stipulations within comparison. In certain cases, it divides the several internal mindsets like Zeno’s Dilemma, dividing “Infinite Points” until the ‘ball reaches the wall”. As you grow familiar with these laws, you will, no doubt, disagree with my findings. GOOD! It means you’re learning, through application!

Here’s how they list, in this man’s mind:

The Law of…

  1. Infinite Probability

  2. Singular/Personal Perspective

  3. Infinite Perspectives

  4. Cumulative Realities

  5. Similarity*

  6. Connection/Contagion*

  7. Personification

  8. Causality/Inverse Causality (Linear Time)

  9. "All Is Now" (Illusory Time)

  10. Pragmatism*

  11. Unity/The Web or Weave

  12. Paradoxical Reality Models (Subjectivism)

  13. Micro/Macro-Cosmic Relationships

  14. Dynamic Equilibrium

  15. Information

  16. Unknowns/Uncertainty (Chaos)

  17. Self-Knowledge*

  18. True Names*

  19. Words of Power*

  20.  Symbols of Power*

  21. Positive Attraction*

  22. Opposite Attraction*

  23. Intelligencia

There may be more, but they haven't resurfaced during the composition of this page.
As I remember how I employ  them, I'll extend the list (and perhaps even rename the page!).
When I say, "I've forgotten more Magic than most people have learned", this is one of those cases.

We'll take them One or Two at a time, as certain Laws require a more in-depth examination.
