Unknowns/Uncertainty (Chaos) Find that place where your knowledge ends, and it is a void that can be of great value. “Look into the place where you fear to look, and you will find me staring back at you!” ~Frank Herbert, “Dune”
“The ignorance of mankind equates to the infinite”. I can’t recall who spoke these words, but in an infinite universe, you cannot know everything. There will always be variables beyond your recall or reckoning, let alone your control. 100% success is a never-achieved goal, and the Golden Ring a magician will ever reach for.
…or is it?
What lies in that darkness is a world of chaos? If observation creates reality, then what is un-observable is in a constant state of “If”. It is un-defined by its very un-observe-ability. So much that is in constant flux that perhaps not-knowing is an asset. What you have yet to observe can-be and IS anything & everything, until the moment it is observed, and the reality is set. Entire fields of practice have been generated, by means of this simple formula: as probability (order) equals a finite value, chaos is it’s reciprocal, and therefore remains infinite. These are usually lumped under a single term: Chaos Magic.
If the pursuit of Information, and control over all variables, becomes a daunting task, the Unknowable can be set to the task by filling in the blanks. These two issues can bump up against each other, or they can complete each other. They are the yin & yang of the magical practitioner, as they are constantly interacting. Chaos is the Holes in the Landscape of Magic, and the “Whole” that the landscape exists within.
Until it is observed, all is in chaos. Observation imposes order. As time passes, that order decays, in accord with the probability of change in accord with unobserved events (which can be any & infinite) as well as simple entropy.
